How to Become the Best BI Reporting Professional - Today’s podcast is about ‘How to Become the Best BI Reporting Professional.’ You have been staring at your computer screen for so long you can see your presentations, spreadsheets, and documents with your closed but burning eyes. These tasks take forever. You wonder if there is a better way, but how? You want to improve your presence in meetings, but how? Stop working so many hours. Become the authority for reporting at work. Fix work problems before they happen. So I was watching these TED videos on my iPhone and I ran across the one by Simon Sinek, and it was amazing. He did this phenomenal job of explaining the difference in how you organize and how you present information with how our brains actually respond to it. He went into the biology of our brain and how it hits a certain part of your brain first before it hits another part of the brain and so how you present information registers for people on an emotional level before it registers in these others areas, so it was amazing...

How To Deliver A Good BI Application - Today’s Webinar is focused on how to deliver a good BI application the first time and avoid expensive rework and in so doing improving quality. Today, we will share our experiences helping companies implement a repeatable and successful delivery process including real life examples where implementation of agile BI delivery methods have resulted in productivity gains of 66% within two release cycles. The structure of the Webinar today will be focused on the number of areas. First, we will talk about motivation, so why should we embrace Agile BI methods. We’ll talk about the common problems with the old school approach of waterfall methods. We’ll talk about this theory and the practice of Agile BI. And we’ll talk about ways to automate parts of the delivery process. If you think about even “small” data warehousing projects, there are going to be at least 3-5 source systems. Those source systems might have 30 or so tables. Each one of those tables may have 30 or so columns. You can see that very quickly the number of data elements is going to explode. In this case if you do the math we are talking about 4,500 data elements, but the trick is if you really think about it there are probably only 100 to 150 data elements that really are important to the business. If we can identify what those key business elements are then perhaps we can turn the delivery cycle around a bit and deliver those items based on business priority...
How Is Elastic BI Implemented? - Elastic BI (Elastic Business Intelligence) refers to the ability of a BI system to dynamically scale its resources based on fluctuating data processing needs. This involves automatically adjusting compute, storage, and query processing power to handle varying workloads efficiently, without manual intervention. The concept of elasticity is borrowed from cloud computing, where resources can be rapidly provisioned or de-provisioned to meet demand. In the context of Business Intelligence, Elastic BI allows businesses to manage large, unpredictable, or growing volumes of data while maintaining high performance, reducing costs, and ensuring accessibility to insights. It's particularly relevant for organizations leveraging cloud-based BI solutions or hybrid cloud architectures...
How Organizations Are Using BI - What will really impact how organizations are using BI? Next gen BI is going to be more automated, and it’s going to be more pervasive. It is going to be more unified because today an organization can have lots of different BI tools addressing different components of business intelligence. Lastly it is going to be limitless. Traditional BI tools have presented too many limitations. These are the changes that will make a big impact on BI adoption and penetration. Speaking specifically about automation, all of those steps of preparing for BI up to creating a data warehouse, that’s typically eighty percent of the work. And 80% of that work is concentrated on just finding the data that is needed, before it can even be transformed, if necessary, before it can be integrated with other data sources. So if you take 80% of the 80%, that’s 64% of the entire effort that is completely un-automated. That’s an area for BI vendors to help out with technologies that are very similarly to search technologies. Rather than relying on human knowledge of experienced people who just know where the customer table is, where the products table is, there will be technology that is similar to search technology which crawls all of the data out there to discover new bits in the enterprise that would be valuable to business users...
How to Perform Data Mashup for Comprehensive Analytics in Higher Education - A data mashup can provide a thorough view of what's happening within higher education institutions and show what people should change to maintain the best student outcomes. Since a data mashup combines information from multiple sources into one platform, it can help people uncover trends and identify actionable steps faster than they otherwise might. However, getting the best results from data-mashing efforts requires following a particular process. Administration leadership must start by determining what they want to achieve by creating the data mashup. One smart way to narrow down the possibilities is to consider how they're already used in higher education. A business intelligence dashboard is one of the most common types. Higher education professionals use BI platforms to identify high-risk students who may only graduate with extra support. In contrast, the data could highlight characteristics shared by the happiest or best-performing learners. Considering stakeholders' expectations can also help set meaningful goals for a data mashup. Would they care more about student retention, attracting new learners or something else? Narrowing down the top data mashup objectives helps people stay on track throughout the process...
How Would a Resort Management Software Solution Customize Its Business Intelligence Features? - A Resort Management Software (RMS) solution can greatly benefit from customized business intelligence (BI) features to enhance its overall efficiency and decision-making processes. Here are several ways in which a resort management software can tailor its BI features: Guest Analytics: Personalization: Customize BI to analyze guest preferences, behaviors, and demographics. This data can be used to personalize guest experiences, recommend services, and improve overall satisfaction. Loyalty Programs: Implement BI tools to track and analyze the effectiveness of loyalty programs. Assess which incentives and rewards are driving customer loyalty and adjust programs accordingly. Revenue Management: Dynamic Pricing Analysis: Utilize BI to analyze market trends, demand patterns, and competitor pricing to optimize room rates dynamically. This ensures maximum revenue during peak times and attracts guests during low-demand periods. Channel Performance: Evaluate the performance of different booking channels through BI to identify the most profitable ones. Adjust marketing strategies based on the data to maximize revenue. Operational Efficiency: Resource Utilization: Customize BI to monitor the utilization of resources such as staff, amenities, and facilities. Identify peak operational times and allocate resources efficiently to improve service quality. Maintenance Planning: Implement predictive analytics through BI to schedule preventive maintenance for facilities and equipment. This reduces downtime, enhances guest satisfaction, and extends the lifespan of assets...
Increase Agility with Traditional BI Infrastructure - There is another way to increase agility with traditional BI infrastructure. It is probably a more expensive and more difficult to do, but is also one of the low hanging fruit that we have seen our clients deploy is that even they have a very heavy investment in the entire environment right, both ETL data warehouse and BI. Let’s say you have thousands and thousands of canned report that you really can’t give up. You can’t really think about re-writing them in a different tool using a different technology, then switching your data warehouse architecture would be a low hanging fruit. You could keep all of your SQL. You can keep all of your queries and not change them. Just switch your row type relational database to a columnar type relational database. SQL will still work, and basically they are migrating from one database platform to another. All of a sudden your queries run faster, and you are tuning for query optimization. Your requirements for tuning, for query optimization, and physical data modeling all of a sudden really becomes much, much less significant...
Increasing Adoption of BI Software with Better Integration - The next big tip in increasing adoption of BI software is better integration. If you want to break down barriers and silos, you can't live in an environment where people operate in silos. It needs to work with your existing security environment. May be you can embed it into an existing enterprise application, into your Internet portal, or a share point environment that you have and everybody uses for all the document collection. I think a big way to increase integration is really using notifications and alerts that are sent straight to your inbox. So, here's an example of such an alert that I received to my inbox about two days ago, and what you can see here is, for example, is that day four has an increase in downtime, and I can immediately see that behavior. I can click on that link and go to the dashboard and further investigate what's going on here. So, it's a great way to be a bit more proactive versus constantly having to remember to log into a dashboard and consume the information. You can also set up a reminder to check your numbers whenever new data comes in or every Monday at 8:00 a.m. before your management meeting...

Integrate, Report, and Analyze Data Any Way You Want - Well let’s create a globally consistent way to integrate, report and analyze data and then just open up lots of local franchises throughout the company in either the sales, service, marketing, HR, finance or some of the different lines of business units. And then by bringing it to the local market it’s going to be more responsive. It’s going to have more domain expertise, but there is still a sort of global consistency. So that might be more right for a more centralized self-service BI approach. Now I have seen other folks, and a lot of manufacturers come to mind who tend to be very decentralized, base their BI strategy upon lines of business units. They wanted to be even more decentralized, and they almost had what I would almost view as a bottoms-up approach where essentially the different departments get to do whatever they want. They can integrate, report and analyze data any way they want, and they had full autonomy and full control. And the job of the centralized team is really just to kind of watch what the decentralized teams are doing, and when they are doing something really useful, identify that and promote that, and disseminate that out to the other departments and say hey, this team over here is doing something really cool, let’s make this more widely available to other aspects of our enterprise...
Integrating Spark into the BI Application - To avoid the aforementioned problems, the key is to break down the barrier between Spark and the BI tool. Instead of relying on the JDBC/ODBC interface, we completely fused Spark into Style Intelligence. The following is a high-level view of the integration. All interactions between Style Intelligence and Spark are through the native API. Spark becomes a native part of the product. Data inside a cluster can be accessed through Spark SQL using SQL-like queries, or directly as files or data connectors provided by the data stores. Unlike JDBC, data is not retrieved from Spark until it has finished all processing and is ready to be presented to users. Equally importantly, data processing jobs normally performed by BI tools are also pushed into the cluster. For example, to join the result of a Spark SQL query with an in-memory table, the in-memory table is pushed into the cluster, and the join is submitted to the InetSoft execution engine embedded in the Spark nodes. Data already residing in the cluster is never moved...

Intuitive Self-service BI - While InetSoft has been providing reporting software for fourteen years, our BI platform, Style Intelligence has been in the market for four years now. The adoption rate is growing. And part of the reason is because of the feedback we are receiving from customers so along the lines of this: they start to put the software into the hands of certain people in one department, others start to see the use of that dashboard and reporting tool by their colleagues, and then the usage grows in a kind of viral fashion because there is really no training involved. The way an end user can easily explore and understand their own data without IT involvement is very compelling for those co-workers. So that tends to spread to others. It’s easy to access the application since it’s Web based, and all that is needed is a browser. You just need a to make simple request to IT to get permissions, and then soon you could be exploring your own data. So it has a very viral spreading effect in organizations, and we have seen that kind of intuitive simpleness really appealing to end users that otherwise have struggled with traditional BI tools...

Justice Department BI Example - The Department of Justice (DOJ) is responsible for securing the safety of American citizens by prosecuting crime and protecting civil rights. The DOJ is comprised of many agencies that rely heavily on data analysis, such as Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Business Intelligence is key to understanding patterns of crime as well as social trends such as recreational drug use or gun ownership that, while not illegal, may have widespread impacts on citizens' safety, and which have historically been attractive areas for organized crime. For example, DEA tracks a number of aspects related to the illicit use of fentanyl, including methods of synthesis and common additives (https://www.dea.gov/documents/2022/2022-08/2022-08-22/cy-2021-fentanyl-profiling-program-fpp). Business Intelligence analysis such as this allows the agency to stay abreast of changing pattern of drug usage, inform the public of present dangers, and strategically target enforcement actions.
Key Requirements for Mobile BI - Based on our experience with earlier customers I want to lay out five key requirements for mobile BI based on an overall theme that mobile BI users expect freedom. I won’t go into core business intelligence requirements here. Instead I want to focus specifically on mobile BI capabilities that must exist for any BI solution to be successful, in meeting mobile BI user requirements...
Key Requirements for Mobile BI Continued - Business users also want the freedom to explore the information however they want. In terms of drilldown, I think you need to provide the ability to drill anywhere, allow them to search, drill, filter, sort in essence explore the data, the way their mind works. Don’t constrain them with limited drill pads. Allow them the freedom to pursue the insights wherever they are, without having to wait for a new report or a dashboard to be created for them...

Lessons for Creating a Successful BI Application - Well, the first lesson is just recognizing how important business intelligence is to giving companies a competitive advantage. So really, just first off, being creative about what problem can business intelligence solve. And let’s be clear, business intelligence is not only for for-profit companies, it's also for nonprofits, and agencies, service industries, where really they just need to be able to operate more efficiently. So I think some of the most interesting insights to me was one that I call “relevance.” This means taking the current process of defining requirements where usually the IT professionals will ask the business what they need, and instead flip it on its head. It's really studying what our workers are doing, what information do they need to do their job more efficiently, and it’s providing that information to them in a way that’s easy, that’s accessible and integrated into their work process. Another lesson has to do with the Business-IT partnership, and unfortunately, still in many companies, there is a huge disconnect between these two stakeholders. And when there is not a partnership between the business and IT, you really can't be successful with business intelligence. In that case, it's really just a point solution and something that will only have moderate success...
Live BI Dashboard Deployments - In the past we had live BI dashboard deployments where you could exactly copy things that you have built out into a remote environment. Now we support multiple environments right here within Style Studio so I can easily switch over to my production server or to the development server. And so using a development server directly, the left hand side now updates to show me additional sources that are defined in that environment, and I can also connect directly to that remote report repository. So here I can open up a report from the development server’s repository, right here within Style Studio, any changes that I make and save will be saved directly back to the server. And so that this is a really good way to do a live development, or make some quick changes based on an issue or some requests that’s come out for a change without having to go through a full development and deployment cycle. Additionally, when I have a report, I can basically save the report either as a file and this is the whole behavior as an SRT and then manually deploy that report out, or I can also save it back into the repository automatically creating a new entry, and so it can be run from the Web interface. And lastly, when I deploy this report, my deployment dialog now has two options, either deploying out to a repository, for example, deploying from the development server to the production server...
