Business Intelligence Vendors - Business intelligence vendor InetSoft joins a BI podcast. We have observed how our customers approach BPM needs in general. They typically have two approaches to address this. One is they get a BPM suite. That is software that they would deploy into the different departments. Then the second way that they do that is to customize the different components that go into an enterprise business intelligence solution. And a lot of those components are coming from their existing business applications. Those are either transactional or more strategic. Then they need something to string all those components together. Many times, the suite product they use still addresses only some requirements of a particular department or process, but does not usually fulfill all of the requirements across an enterprise. In terms of operational business intelligence, then this really becomes a huge win, to pull all of these components together. The key capabilities we have seen customers demand, having to do with accessing multiple data sources, calls for a solution termed data mashup. In our particular BI technology architecture, our solution is based on Data Block technology. This Data Block data mashup capability allows users, in a very dynamic way, to pull data together from different data sources...

Business Intelligence without ETL - A discussion of how InetSoft's business intelligence software, Style Intelligence, can save the need for expensive, inflexible ETL processes normally required for a data warehouse and business intelligence solution. Do you assume you need ETL tools and a data warehouse for a BI solution? InetSoft offers Web based reporting and dashboard software that accesses disparate data sources directly. If you already have an ETL process established and running smoothly, InetSoft's Style Intelligence™ business intelligence platform can easily interact with the data in your data warehouse. However, if you are looking to cut down on the resource and cost overhead associated with this cumbersome infrastructure and these rigid, manual processes, there is an alternative. Or if you are just beginning to research a BI project and have read the standard BI implementation best practices that steer you towards the middle layers of ETL and data warehousing, realize that it is not necessarily the case any longer. New business intelligence software exists that can save you the investment in ETL tools and data warehouses...

Business Users of a New BI System - How do you get business users comfortable with a new BI system? Any change in technology can generate excitement and fear, depending on the personality of the person. Most of the time it’s fear and anxiety about learning something new, when they were comfortable, if not satisfied, with the old way. A short orientation training session is a good start, and creating quick-start one sheeters about how to open up and use the first pre-built dashboards is next. After a few weeks of experience with those KPI dashboards, identify the users who want more self-service, and give them a short training on how to modify existing dashboards and reports. After a few more weeks, give them a short training on how to develop dashboards from scratch. Ask them to identify in advance one that they have been wanting and make the building of it the in-class activity. These power users gradually teach their colleagues more and more, since they will be known as the resident experts, and would always be more responsive than IT. Every 6 months thereafter offer the same build-from-scratch classes and let other people sign up for them as they wish. This gradual, voluntary approach is recommended. It also takes into account new hires as they come into the company over time...
Businesses Shifting Towards Self-service - Absolutely, and so the underlying feeds here, behind that, expanding the range and volume and granularity of data that you are looking at with your computer horsepower, and also thinking about, I will call it data timeliness or maybe data shelf life. That’s the time from the instant when data theoretically becomes available and when you can actually get it to the point where it could be actionable or insightful for your users. That becomes a significant computer problem in today’s environment and certainly one that’s not only a technical challenge but also an economic challenge. So, we will bring in the money factor here, I am sure in these discussions at some point and stop to look at what does it cost you to, as you say manage the life cycle of data that is useful to you, but granularity in details is certainly a big part of it. Jim Ericson: You know David, this is Jim, and that’s an interesting point because it might be that we are hitting kind of a blowback point. I remember years ago folks who would talk about some of the domains and folks who would talk about data warehouses as places where data goes to die, you know. And I am seeing an influx, we discussed this a little bit on this show a couple of weeks ago. We were talking about disposing of data and rediscovery of things like that...

Call It Business Intelligence for IT - So what we talk about is really applying some of the really major forces that have really catapulted data warehousing and business intelligence and applying those in the IT space. You can call it business intelligence for IT. In a data warehouse environment, there is no lack of data. There is plenty of data. In fact, you keep it in warehouses, and then, what you are doing is applying new techniques like data mining and other types of BI solutions to understand how you are going to run the business better. We are taking that same approach and applying it to IT. There is performance data out there. There is lots of it. In fact, there are performance warehouses. We say, “okay, how can we take that, apply some predictive analytics to it and use that to get a future view of what’s going on.” So you can be proactive about it. Then, you have more time and can make better decisions in order to solve the problem of how do you deliver service in a constant changing environment. So that’s the analogy...
Case for Combining Geographic Information and Business Intelligence - What is really missing from point GIS solutions is the business intelligence. And what is missing from many business intelligence solutions is the location intelligence. Bringing these two systems together is the first step in maximizing investment in either technology. What is interesting is that it might actually be the case that the pubic sector maybe ahead of private enterprises in this case. It seems the public sector recognizes the importance of geographic information, and a lot of these organizations do have BI software, too. So the building blocks are there. And now with our own recent product release we’ve brought these two systems together. GIS and BI each brings a complementary approach to the other. The geographic approach to business intelligence enables geography to be a new means of organizing data. Location can relate disparate data in ways other traditional techniques have difficulty doing. Similarly business intelligence brings an industrial strength reporting environment to GIS. So those are the conceptual reasons why it’s a good idea to mash up these two technologies, if you will...
