What Are Containers?
To understand how these benefits come about, here's a definition of container technology:
Containers are prepackaged software components that are bundled into a binary package called a container image. Images can be transferred between any machine and any operating system. Any machine that is equipped with an operating system and a container runtime is referred to as a host. A host may be either a physical computer or virtual machine that runs the container runtime.
Images contain everything needed to begin and carry out the process that will be executed within the container runtime once copied to a host. Images are typically sourced from image registries and copied to hosts where they will be executed. After an image is downloaded to a host, then the code encapsulated in the image is ready to be started and run on that specific host.
The step where images are downloaded to hosts is called "pulling" images, which comes from the idea that the term "pull" in the command line interface of Docker is used. The definition of pulling an image is that it copies the image from a remote image registry, and saves the image into the local file system of the host that has pulled the image. For example, in the case of Docker, the image is stored in a directory named "/var/lib/docker").
There is a condition that every image pulled by a host is executable or runnable as a container only on the host that has pulled that image. Images pulled by one host cannot be executed on another host, regardless if the downloaded image and the directory in which it is stored are available on a shared file system that is accessible to multiple hosts. The rule is that for another host to run a container from a given image, that host must first pull its own copy of the image, and save a copy of the image to its own local file system.

What is Kubernetes?
Those containers that can be run across multiple hosts will be managed and synchronized by container orchestration software. Kubernetes is considered the leading container orchestration software these days. Kubernetes automates the deployment, scaling and lifecycle operations of containers across a Kubernetes cluster no matter how many hosts. These hosts are then called Kubernetes nodes.
Containers are run on Kubernetes nodes within the boundaries of a Kubernetes lifecycle management system which is called a Kubernetes pod. Additional Kubernetes terms are Kubernetes service, Kubernetes deployment, and Kubernetes scheduling. Of the functions Kubernetes automatically handles, the first is scheduling decisions, based on various criteria, that control the starting and running of pods and their associated containers on Kubernetes nodes within a Kubernetes cluster. Once a pod and its associated containers are scheduled to run on given Kubernetes node, then Kubernetes will instruct that node to pull the relevant images and instantiate the containers based on those images. Kubernetes administrators are able to control the scheduling process, meaning they can determine which Kubernetes nodes are able to run specific pods and pull specific images.
